As Deputy State Director for AFP-Virginia, you'll serve as a top strategic leader helping shape and execute the chapter's policy, political, and grassroots priorities across the Commonwealth. We're looking for an entrepreneurial, versatile leader who moves fluidly between big-picture strategy and hands-on execution, and who can travel regularly throughout Virginia.

How You Will Contribute

    • Partner with the State Director to build and execute strategy across public policy, government affairs, grassroots advocacy, and political engagement in Virginia.
    • Track Virginia's General Assembly, executive branch, elections, and policy landscape, and turn that knowledge into clear strategy and opportunities for the chapter.
    • Build trusted relationships with legislators, administration officials, coalition partners, and community leaders across the political spectrum.
    • Lead major legislative and advocacy initiatives from strategy through execution, working closely with grassroots, communications, and political teams.
    • Supervise, coach, and develop team members, building a high-performing, collaborative culture.
    • Represent AFP publicly with policymakers, coalition partners, media, and other audiences, and step into new priorities as they come up.

What You Will Bring

    • Strong working knowledge of public policy, politics, and government affairs, and how they connect to grassroots strategy.
    • Experience with legislative affairs, lobbying, policy development, coalition building, or grassroots advocacy.
    • An entrepreneurial mindset: you take ownership, solve problems, and move work forward without heavy direction.
    • Strong political judgment and the ability to tell short-term activity apart from work that creates lasting impact.
    • Experience building trusted relationships with elected officials, policymakers, and community leaders.
    • Experience leading, coaching, or developing high-performing teams.
    • Strong communication skills and comfort representing an organization publicly.
    • Familiarity with Virginia's political and legislative landscape, or the demonstrated ability to build that quickly.
    • A valid driver's license.
    • Enthusiasm to contribute to Stand Together's vision and principled approach to solving problems, and a commitment to stewarding our culture, which champions values including transformation and innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect. 

Standout Candidates Will Bring

    • Significant experience in or around a state legislature, governor's office, political campaign, advocacy organization, or policy organization.
    • Established relationships within Virginia's political, business, or civic community.
    • A track record of integrating policy, political, grassroots, and communications strategy into a single coordinated plan.
